death of straightedge
you tattooed x's on yourself
but then you threw it away, just put it on the shelf.
you condemned their vice
then did it yesterday without thinking twice. |
i held it all inside the day i should have cried,
the day that straightedge died.
i held it all inside
the day that straightedge died. |
your hardcore bands were all the rage
but now your rap stars take away all of your taste.
you turn the page of straight edge 'zines
but now you don't recall, don't recall what it means. |
i held it all inside the day i should have cried,
the day that straightedge died.
i held it all inside
the day that straightedge died. |
another stupid fad gone bad.
the idea was good but now it's all gone wrong.
maybe it's time for us to move on.
perhaps in time we can start it all over again. |

in ninth grade i was almost a member of the straightedge scene, mostly because all my skateboarding buddies were proclaiming straightedge. mike b., quin m., the whole crew at shorecrest. actually our school was known for its straightedge bands: undertow and said child. it was really quite a large fad and a good idea for a fad, to boot. but as these straightedge extremists grew up they succumbed to the woes of the real world and began exploring drugs. i'm glad i was never indoctrinated fully into the scene, or i would probably have smoked pot with them in the south parking lot. a friend of mine once said straightedge is a crutch. i say that drugs are also a crutch, it takes strengh to avoid both crutches. |
