Wonderful lo-fi exploration adventure in a small but charming world.
One time, I was in the butterfly enclosure of the local science center and a butterfly chose to alight upon my shoulder in, undoubtedly, a gesture of honoring my presence and acknowledging my care for the natural world. A Short Hike is a very similar experience. The tiny island that serves as the main setting for this lovely game is somehow big enough to hold a variety of experiences and surprises that all seem to delight the player. From a simple dialogue interaction to finding a treasure map or a rock that spits out money when you try to dig it up, each moment is a treat. The overarching story is simple but touching, the world is pretty but straightforward, and the design of the island is interesting while easy to explore.
In general, this game is a couple hours of warmth and a lot of love has gone into its creation. It is almost perfect and my only gripes are the camera is awkward at times, the inventory screen should have more than one row, and I wish it was a long hike instead of a short hike. Playing on keyboard felt a bit strange to me with the isometric controls, so I might try a controller for my next playthrough when I need another couple hours of chill time.
Truly a heartwarming experience all around.
