Back in the very early 2000's I was living in a cheap rent situation where 7 or 8 of us were in a 5 bedroom house and, obviously, I had to be very frugal. So, a bit of shareware on the cheapest Mac I could afford would entertain me for upwards of several hours. Airburst fits that bill well. Essentially, you're defending yourself against an onslaught of projectiles launched by up to 3 other players who are also trying to defend themselves from projectiles so that the bubbles that are holding you floating in space don't pop and you succumb to the gravity of the situation. I never played the "extreme" version of the game, but the classic version is fine for a while.

However, playing against the CPU gets kind of dull after a while and, despite having many roommates, not a ton of folks wanted to play along, so my experience was probably less exciting than others with this game. I do remember it a couple decades later but it doesn't hold a cherished place in the hallowed halls of my declining memory banks these days. Plus, how do you even play this game now? Find an emulator for ancient Mac OS, download the file from some weird old mac repository, and then hope that it triggers memories of a better time? That sounds like a lot of work just to spin around and deflect some projectiles for a little while.

They didn't even finish the remake, remember!

If you like this page, you can buy me a coffee.
