The 90's were a wild time, right?
You could just take a game that already existed, slap a new name on it, completely remake it with new graphics and features, add some wacky sound effects, sell it on a shareware license, and rule the college dorms. With a Mac game! However, everyone with a Mac at the time knew that if you were into games, you downloaded Ambrosia software games. Sure, a number of their games were just remade arcade games but to clone Centipede and improve on it is an achievement. The gameplay is straightforward: move around and shoot stuff. While the original was only that, the Ambrosia version added power-ups, extra enemies and surprises, and the aforementioned wacky graphics and sounds.
You know, every once in a while I think I should buy a classic Mac and set it up to run OS 9 or whatever and do some retro gaming. The suite of Ambrosia games would be my first download and they would be fun. For a while. Then, I'd shut down the old Mac and swivel over to my new Mac and look for an emulator. I'd probably play Apeiron a couple more times and then, as it has for a couple decades, it would gather dust, a fond memory that you can look back on every 30 years or so.
Someone should really remake this for mobile, I suppose, as it would be a solid venue for this style of game...
