The right elements are there but something just doesn't seem right about this game.



I think I might have loved this game but it couldn't quite deliver on the promises. Look, there are martial arts expert mutated animals in a post-apocalyptic world full of chaos and sort of magic. It looks very nice and there are some moderately interesting story beats around nature and the tribes and what not. You can sort of adapt your preferred play style with the customizing of the character attributes and weapon crafting. It should have been pretty good.

However, I think it is let down by the everpresent narration and the karma system. The narration style is that of a old-timey children's cartoon like Winnie The Pooh, which sort of makes sense with the animals and such. Yet it becomes a constant annoyance and is also strangely distant, always commenting in a weird third person. Oh, and the names of things are patently ridiculous. The narration, I feel, keeps you from really entering the world of Biomutant, which is why you would want to play this game. The karma system is a weird devil/angel character interaction that was far too cartoonish. And really, I think that's the crux of the problem here: tone. Biomutant never decides if it wants to be a serious game or a silly game and gets stuck somewhere in the middle. Many people have described it as a disappointment and, though I played through the whole story, I feel about the same.

However, if you're into the themes and can see past the annoyances, it could still be enjoyable few hours for the right price.
