What if you wanted to pet all the animals but could only do so after the world ended?
If you don't know by now, the planet is doomed and it is our fault. This game will take you through all the ways that we screwed up the gift of life on Earth with our greed and negligence. All the cutest animals are going to die and you should probably feel something about it. However, playing this game is likely not going to elicit those feelings of sadness or regret for a number of reasons. It will, instead, be a mostly relaxed experience in a pretty good looking post-apocalypse. Despite some pretty glaring flaws, I think the concept, the graphics, and the level design make it a game to consider playing if you have the patience.
Let's get the biggest flaw right out of the way... this game is SLOW. Your fairy character is floaty in such a way that falling is slow, jumping is slow, and the camera is seemingly slow to respond. Getting through levels is slow because finding your landing spot after a floaty jump is supposed to be aided by a circle that appears on the ground but it doesn't always work correctly and you fall short of your goal way too often. To top it off, the levels are too long. On a number of the trips to save an animal spirit I found myself getting sad that the level had a whole extra section. I am stubborn, though and it took me 12 hours to rescue the 8 animals and get to the kind of cool prize idea at the end of the game. I was indulging in finding the little animal spirits and the memories but once I had petted enough animals I realized I was never looking at the memories and decided to focus more on the big spirits. I know those big spirits, when presented in their saddest of states, were supposed to be the catalyst for an emotional response but you never make enough of a connection with the particular animal you rescue to have those heart strings tugged. So, the game is slow and not emotional enough but is kind of pretty.
If you want a sad game about humans messing up the world, you can try After Us, but really should check out Endling instead.
