Unfortunately, a bit of a let down after Cat Quest 2.

After playing Cat Quest 2 co-op with my partner a few years back and enjoying the sweet action RPG, we were looking forward to CQIII, even pre-ordering the game. However, after finishing the quests and earning our platinum trophy, we didn't find we had as much fun as the previous entry in the series. The games have an unstoppable premise: a cute cat character hacks and magics their way through some adventures. In this, the third game, the cats are little pirates and have a fancy boat and everything. As in previous games, the world is absolutely soaked in puns and well-rendered cartoon-ish graphics. However, after playing two games of this formula, Cat Quest 3 isn't as fresh and exciting.

The game felt a bit easier than previous versions, the weapons were varied but not extreme enough to notice the variation much, and the story probably wouldn't make much sense to a newcomer to the series and, frankly, was not as heartfelt this time. While captaining a ship as a tiny cat was a nice addition and better than just swimming out to new islands, it made the map feel small and exploring was less satisfying somehow (except finding the Gentlebros, that was kind of cool). More content is planned but I'm not sure we'll dive back in to try it at this point.

This would be a pretty good game to co-op with a younger sibling or niece or nephew, however!
