There's no reason not to remake this game for every generation of Playstation console until the end of time.
One of the best games of the PS3 era lived on as one of the best games of the PS4 era and has now made a comeback as one of the best games of the PS5 era while also being one of the best TV adaptations of a video game since the Super Mario Brothers Super Show. When a game has an incredible, heartfelt story set in a thoughtfully crafted world it can apparently transcend the limits of any medium to reach for greatness.
I missed out on the original somehow and waited until the PS4 remaster to understand the impact of this game. The story is both a parable on the infamous Trolley Problem and a post-apocalyptic adventure tale. It will break your heart several times along the way to the final heart-wrenching ending and is truly a great exploration of the survival of the human spirit in a dark time. In post-election 2024 in the US, it hits particularly hard as we endure the fading pandemic, watch the rise of America's inherent dark side, and potentially cascade towards the nadir of democracy. While us aging white dudes like to imagine ourselves as the hero doing whatever they can for our loved ones, the truth is most of us will probably have a bunch of mushroom brains and end up shived in the head.
But I digress... this game is fantastic every time I play it despite a couple of flaws. The story allows me to forgive some of the clunkiness of controlling the characters. The beautifully rendered environment allows me to push through some of the slower pacing. There are choices made in gameplay design that might limit the joy of playing but increase the realistic feel of the world, such as having extremely limited ammunition. I'd list more flaws but all I can remember is the stellar voice acting, the impeccable sound design, the highly authentic characters and their development, and the complete immersion into this world and story that keep me coming back to play this even in the darkest of times.
Who might this not be for? Perhaps you're not a fan of stealth game mechanics and prefer to blast your way through a world? Perhaps you're one of those anti-"woke" gamers who froth at the mouth when someone doesn't look like you? Maybe you're just a general fool? This game is iconic, legendary, and a must play for anyone who prefers their game to have a meaningful impact on their lives. I should have played it way back in 2013 but I don't regret playing it several times since then.
